Something’s already bugging you, isn’t it? That’s usually why people end up here. A radiator that’s never quite hot enough. A noise from the airing cupboard you’ve started walking past without really registering. Or you opened the gas bill and thought, that can’t be right, surely.
It probably is right, unfortunately. Boilers don’t tend to just die on you out of nowhere. They usually give you a bit of warning first if you know what to listen for. Here’s what we’d tell you to get looked at now, before the actual cold weather arrives and you’re stuck without heating on the worst possible night.
1. Cold radiators or cold spots
The top is cold, but the bottom is warm? Nine times out of ten that’s just trapped air. Radiator key, five minutes, sorted. Honestly one of the easier jobs going.
It’s the opposite pattern that’s more annoying, warm at the top and cold underneath. That’s sludge, rust and general gunk that’s built up at the bottom of the radiator over the years. Bleeding won’t do anything for that one. You need a proper flush.
Then there’s the radiator that’s just stone cold while everything else in the house is fine. Could it need balancing, which basically means the hot water isn’t spreading itself out evenly across the system? Not urgent on its own, any of this, but leave it a while and the boiler ends up working harder than it should for no good reason.
2. Strange noises
A quiet hum in the background? Don’t worry about that. What we mean is anything you’d describe as new, or different, or a bit off. The stuff that makes you stop what you’re doing for a second.
Banging usually comes down to air or sludge. Gurgling, a similar story, as sometimes it’s the pump struggling rather than the pipes. Whistling’s normally limescale narrowing something and making the water work harder to get through. None of it goes away by itself. It just sits there getting slightly worse until someone deals with it.
3. Rising energy bills
Bit of a sneaky one, this. Nothing actually breaks, or nothing you’d notice anyway. A boiler that’s losing efficiency doesn’t tell you, it just quietly starts eating more gas to do what it used to do for less.
So if your bill’s gone up and your habits haven’t changed, don’t just shrug it off as prices are generally being mad at the moment. Could be, sure. Could also be worth a quick check before it becomes an actual breakdown rather than just an expensive one.
4. Boiler cutting out or pilot light issues
Boiler switching itself off partway through, or does the pilot light keep dying on you? That’s not nothing. Something in there isn’t happy, and constantly resetting it isn’t really a fix, it’s just putting off finding out what’s wrong.
If it’s happening more than once, especially with a weird smell or a flame that’s not a steady blue anymore, don’t sit on that one. Get it checked.
5. Leaks or dropping pressure
Right, this is the one we’d actually push back on if you tried to leave it. Topping up the pressure every few weeks? Spotted a leak near the boiler or somewhere along the pipework? That’s not a someday job.
A tiny drip now is a much bigger, wetter, more expensive problem in a few months. If you’re even slightly unsure, just get it looked at. Costs you nothing to ask.
What to do next
Recognise any of that? Get someone out now rather than crossing your fingers and hoping it holds until spring. Caught early, most of this stuff is a quick, fairly cheap fix. Left alone, you’re rolling the dice on losing heating entirely during the one stretch of the year you actually need it.
We cover Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and out across the Vale of Glamorgan, and one of our Gas Safe registered engineers will come take a proper look and tell you what’s actually going on, no messing about. And if it turns out to be nothing much, we’ll just tell you that.
Have a look at our central heating repairs page, or if it’s genuinely just been ages since anyone’s checked the system over, our annual servicing tends to catch this stuff before it becomes any of the above in the first place.
Something’s gone wrong today and you need someone now? Get in touch and we’ll get an emergency callout or repair visit sorted.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my radiators cold at the top but hot at the bottom (or vice versa)?
Cold on top, that’s air, bleed it and move on. Cold at the bottom, that’s sludge, and it’ll need a flush rather than a quick fix with a key.
Is it normal for a boiler to make noise?
A gentle hum, sure, that’s just how they sound. Banging, gurgling, whistling, not normal, and usually means air, sludge or limescale is getting in the way somewhere.
How quickly can you get an engineer out?
Depends what’s wrong, honestly. Something urgent like no heating at all, or a leak, we’ll move quickly. Give us a call and we’ll tell you exactly where we can fit you in.
Should I turn my heating off if I hear a strange noise?
Minor noise, everything else seems okay? Leave it running until we’ve had a look. Loud bang, smell of burning, anything that’s actually worrying you? Turn it off first, then call us.
